Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh
Recently, we covered grammar rules for editing sentences. Here are some additional benefits not listed on the document presented.
A colon ( : ) is used to introduce lists. The part of the sentence before the colon should be able to stand alone as a independent clause, for example, These are the three most common flavors of ice cream: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
A common error is adding a colon after the verb, for example, The three most common flavors of ice cream are: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
A semicolon ( ; ) is used in place of a period to join two closely related independent clauses, for example, A water main in the building had burst; the floors were covered with water.
