When to use the colon or the semicolon

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh

Recently, we covered grammar rules for editing sentences. Here are some additional benefits not listed on the document presented.

A colon ( : ) is used to introduce lists. The part of the sentence before the colon should be able to stand alone as a independent clause, for example, These are the three most common flavors of ice cream: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

A common error is adding a colon after the verb, for example, The three most common flavors of ice cream are: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

A semicolon ( ; ) is used in place of a period to join two closely related independent clauses, for example, A water main in the building had burst; the floors were covered with water.

Grammar Tidbits

You can start with one SSCG workbook or textbook for each of the three semesters of the year, but your child may need more and Allah knows best. You will find our packets of educational fillers extremely helpful at this point in time inshaAllah.

The SSCG workbook or textbook offers suggestions and ideas for how you are to collect your child’s work in one place. In the suggested folders, your child will store all written and drawn work from their lessons in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, History and Science from Academics.

An additional set of folders will be required for Aqeedah, Tawheed, Fiqh, Seerah, Arabic, and Quran for General Islamic Studies and Islamic History. You can create a collage for photos of larger projects, individual papers, and anything else you would like to include in the suggested activity folders. By the end of each semester, the folders will be filled with written and artistic expressions of daily events in your child’s life. As your child’s writing skills develop, a specific folder for a student portfolio will contain letters, drawings, short sentences, math practice, stories, poems, and more inshaAllah. What a great opportunity to watch them grow! A real example of your child’s expressions and growth walhamdulillah!

Allah ta'ala says:

“O you, who believe, save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is men and stones...”

Surah At-Tahrim 66:6

K3 Orange Level 1st Semester 2nd Semester 3rd Semester

Language Arts Upper and lowercase letters of the English Alphabet

Arabic Alphabet

Long and short vowel sounds

short stories and poetry word families

words in print

phonics

short stories

natural drawing

Short Dua

Short Suwar Printing words

Independent reading

writing sentences

writing the names of Allah

consonant blends

word games and puzzles

Tawheed (all semester)

Social Studies/History Developing a sense of time

Authentic narrations of short stories from Quran and Sunnah

days, weeks, months, and yearly Gregorian/Hijrah calendars

Developing a sense of place (local, regional, and world maps)

Exploring your own community

money, and making purchases

food, its types, and how to grow them organically Civics- Good Citizenship (building the Ummah, taking care of Masjid, neighbors, and the Muslims

playing fair and being just

Your Families rights

Respect for self and others

Diversity

Science Phases of the Moon

Meaning of the stars in the Sunnah

Life cycle of the seed

Animals and their surroundings

Clouds animal behavior

Trees

Hibernation

Arctic and Antarctic

Growing living things indoors Pond life

Forest life

Birds and their activities

Vegetable Gardens

Introduction to Scientific Inquiry

Mathematics Learning symbols +, −, ×, ÷, =

Exploring the four processes

Cardinal Numbers 10-80 Horizontal format for equations 6+3=9

Counting by twos, fives and tens

Odd and even numbers

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) Vertical format for equations

Length, weight, and size

Patterns and Sequence

Counting and sorting money

Geometric Forms

Islamic Studies – students throughout the year are introduced to authentic text for Tawheed and Aqeedah courses inshaAllah.

Quran/Dua Mem – students will study and memorize the short suwar from surah 99-114 inshaAllah; 4 dua a month are introduced for memorization totaling 12 for the semester inshaAllah

Arabic – students are given an introduction to the Arabic alphabet, their sounds and harakaat.

Arts & Crafts – Students are engaged in a variety of activities for Arts & Crafts.
Geography Reports: on Air, Water, and Land Pollution

Geography

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

Recently, students discussed topics on culture, population density and resources. We reviewed questions about the elements that make each culture unique; how crowded a specific area may be per sq. mile according to death rates, birth rates, and famine of the locality and lastly pollution. We briefly reviewed the results used in demographic reports such as a census report or vital statistics. This information can be used to determine how changes in life have affected different groups of people.

Several written assignments are expected from these class discussions:

1. Write a report about (any country) current culture, population and sources of agriculture. Feb.23rd

2. Look up five cities across the United States. Report your findings for the population density, birth rates, and death rates for each area. March 9th

3.

Understanding the Basic Sentence

If you are not familiar with any of the following terms, look them up in the Guide to Grammar Terminology.

comma splice

fragment

complete sentence

fused sentence

run-on sentence

This worksheet will help you understand the most basic concept in writing: the correct punctuation of complete sentences. A complete sentence has the following characteristics:

It contains both a subject and a verb.

It expresses a complete thought – a free standing, self-contained idea.

There are two ways a sentence can be mis-punctuated: as a fragment or as a run-on.

Lesson Concept 1: Identify and correct each fragment. In a sentence fragment something less than a sentence has been punctuated as though it were a complete sentence.

Example: Haleemah found a <strike>cat. Which</strike> she promptly took home.

The fragment which she promptly took home contains both a subject and a verb, but it cannot stand alone as a self-contained idea. Most fragments are continuations of the preceding sentence, so the easiest way to correct the fragments is to attach them to the preceding sentence.

Correction: Haleemah found a cat, which she promptly took home.

Lesson Concept 2: Identify and correct run-ons. In a run-on, two complete sentences have been joined together incorrectly and punctuated as though they were a single sentence.

Example: The principal liked my <strike>idea, she</strike> said she would take it to the board of educators for approval.

This kind of run-on is called a comma splice because it incorrectly uses a comma to join two complete sentences. If two sentences had been put together without any punctuation at all, it would be another kind of run-on called a fused sentence.

Correction: The principal liked my idea; she said she would take it to the board of educators for approval.

Writers sometimes create run-ons when they try to keep closely related ideas together within the same sentence. A good way to achieve the same goal is to join the related sentences together with a semicolon (;).

excerpts from A Commonsense Guide to Grammar and Usage pg. 14 & 15

*Some text altered for the lesson

The Bedford Reader Lesson 4: Poetry and Descriptions

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.

Truly, I hope that your writing assignments are becoming easier and that doing so helps you learn to use vivid, concrete and abstract words for your descriptions in your writings.

Students are to read pages 170-172; The pages that discuss briefly an auto-biography of Emily Dickinson before presenting her poem, A narrow Fellow in the Grass.

After reading the poem:

HW Assignment 6: Suggestions for writing:

2. Have you written poetry? Try it now, choosing as your subject an object or animal to describe -- something you (like Dickinson) have strong feelings about, such as a tree, a beloved cat, a loathed cockroach. Don't worry too much about meter and rhyme; concentrate instead on images.

HW Assignment 7: Continue reading - Emily Dickinson on Writing page 173

1. In what sense might a word "begin to live" when it's said?

Lastly, read pages 174-175; Additional Writing Topics:

HW Assignment 8: Complete all four writing assignments.

1. Describe another person in the room so clearly and unmistakably that when you read your description aloud, your subject will be recognized. (Be objective and refrain from insults in the description, please!)

2. Write three paragraphs describing one subject from each of the following categories. It will be up to you to make the general subject refer to the particular person, place or thing. Write at least one paragraph as an objective description and at least one as a subjective description. (Identify your method in each case, so that it can be seen how well you carry it out.)

Persons

A friend or roommate

One of your parents

A historic figure

Places

A college campus

A forest

A waiting room

Things

A dentist's drill

A foggy day

A train

See more from the list of persons, places, and things on page 174.

3. In a brief essay, describe your ideal place: an apartment, a bookstore, a dorm room, a vacation spot, a restaurant, a gym, a supermarket or convenience store, a garden, or a golf course. With concrete details, try to make the ideal seem actual.

4. Use a combination of narration and description to develop any one of the following topics:

My first day on the job

My first day at college

Returning to an old neighborhood

Getting lost

A brush with a celebrity

Delivering bad (or good) news
