he suggested something to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).
One day Umar Ibn Khataab was standing on the minbar and their was muslims 100
miles away and an army was about to attack, on the minbar he stopped and said
“watch out” and they heard him in his voice 100 miles away.
Hadiths quoted from Sahih Muslim Kitab Fadail Al Sahabah “Virtues of the
Companions”
Saheeh Muslim Hadith #5885
Ibn Abi Mulaika reported: I heard Ibn Abbas as saying: When Umar Ibn Khataab
was placed in the coffin the people gathered around him. They praised him and
supplicated for him before the bier was lifted up, and I was one amongst them.
No thing attracted my attention but a person who gripped my shoulder from
behind. I saw towards him and found that he was Ali. He invoked on Allah’s
mercy upon Umar and said: You have left none behind you whose deeds are so
enviable that I love to meet Allah with them. By Allah, I hoped that Allah
would keep you and your two associated together. I had often heard Allah’s
Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as saying: I came and there came too
Abu Bakr and Umar; I entered and there entered too Abu Bakr and Umar; I went
out and there went out too Abu Bakr and Umar and I hope and think that Allah
will keep you along with them.
***Dawud Adib mentions that the coffin here means the bier that they use to
carry a person, not the coffin that are used in these times. Also that the
Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said there will be two people after me
so follow them Abu Bakr and Umar. ***
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5887
Abu Sa’id Khudri reported Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as
saying: While I was asleep I saw people being presented to me in a dream and
they wore shirts and some of these reached up to the breasts and some even
beyond them. Then there happened to pass Umar Ibn Khataab and his shirt had
been trailing. They said: Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) how
do you interpret the dream? He said as strength of faith.
***Dawud Adib mentions strength of faith meaning deen. Umar Ibn Khataab was
called Al Faaruq- The one that distinguish between what is right and wrong, the
sunnah and the biddah, Tawhid and Shirk, the right path and the wrong path.***
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5890
Abu Hurairah reported Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as
saying: While I was asleep I saw myself on a well with a leather bucket on a
pulley. I drew water out of that as Allah wished me to draw. Then the son of
Abu Quhafa, Abu Bakr drew from it one bucketful or two and there was some
weakness in drawing that (may Allah forgive him) Then that bucket changed into
a large bucket and Ibn Khataab drew it. I did not see any strongest man drawing
it like Umar Ibn Khataab. He brought out so much water that the camels of the
people had enough to drink and then laid down for rest.
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5898
Abu Hurairah reported Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as
saying: While I was asleep I saw myself in paradise and a saw a women
performing ablution by the side of a palace. I said: For whom is it meant? They
said: It is meant for Umar Ibn Khataab. The messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa
Sallam) said: There came across my mind the feeling of Umar and so I turned
back and went away. Abu Hurairah said: Umar wept as we were present in that
meeting with the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) amongst us and Umar
said may my father and mother be taken as ransom for you. Could I at all feel
any jealousy about you?
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5899
Sa’d Ibn Waqqas reported that Umar sought permission from the Prophet
(Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) to visit him when some women of the Quraish were
busy in talking with him and raising their voices above his voice. When Umar
sought permission they stood up and went hurriedly behind the curtain. The
Prophet said (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) I wonder at these women who were
with me and no sooner did they hear your voice, they immediately went behind
the curtain. Thereupon Umar said: Allah Messenger, you have more right that
they should fear you. Then Umar (addressing the women) said. O ye enemies of
yourself, Do you fear me and fear not the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu
Alaihi Wa Sallam)? They said YES you are harsh and strict as compared to the
Messenger of Allah. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said by him in whose hand is my
life, If satan would encounter you on the road he would certainly take a
different way.
***Dawud Adib mentions here that satan is meaning iblis himself not a satan in
general. Also he stated the sisters of our time do exactly what the women of
the past have done by talking over the sheiks, imams, at lectures, and jummah.
But if Umar was alive we would not do it and the proof is from the hadith. (May
Allah help us and rectify our affairs)***
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5903
Ibn Umar reported Umar as saying: My lord concorded with my judgment on three
occoasions. In the case of the station of Ibrahim. In the case of the
observance of the veil and in the case of the prisoners of Badr.
***Dawud Adib mentions that the station of Ibrahim means the kabbah and the
place for salat. He made the suggestion for the women to cover and this is
where the establishment of the hijab came about. In the case of the prisoners
of badr they were killed as Umar suggested and Abu Bakr said let them go.***
Sahih Muslim Hadith #5904
Ibn Umar reported that when Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul (the hypocrite) died,
his son Abdullah Ibn Abdullah came to the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu
Alaihi Wa Sallam) and asked him to give his shirt which should be used for the
coffin of his father. He gave that to him. The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa
Sallam) stood up to say prayer over him. Thereupon Umar caught a hold of the
clothe of Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) and said, are you
going to offer prayer whereas Allah has forbidden to offer prayer for him.
Whereupon the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said Allah has
given me a choice saying ask forgiveness for them or you may not ask for them:
even if you ask for them seventy times, I will make an addition seventy times.
He was a hypocrite and Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said
prayer over him that Allah the exalted and glorious reveled the ayah: “ And
never pray over any one of them that has died and never should you stand by his
grave. Surah Tawbah Ayah 84
*** Dawud Abid mention that this is proof that we can not attend the funerals
of the non-muslims with the exception of your father and mother and as long as
there is no shirk or biddah***
Also he pointed out how all the hadiths talk about receiving revelations.
Subhanaka Allahumma wa Bi Hamdika Ash hadu an la ilaha ill Anta Astaghfiruka wa
atuboo ilaik
